How To Update a Microchip Record After Your Pet Has Passed
Why this tiny update can matter
Microchip records don’t automatically update when a pet passes. Taking ten minutes to correct the listing can prevent painful phone calls, mail, or “found pet” alerts later. If you’re not ready today, you can bookmark this and come back.
What you’ll gather first (2 minutes)
- Your pet’s microchip number (from adoption papers, vet records, or the chip certificate)
- The email/phone currently on file (even if it’s outdated)
- Your current address (optional — update only if you want)
Step 1: identify the registry (3 minutes)
The microchip brand and the registry are not always the same. If you’re unsure, call your vet or the shelter/rescue and ask: “Which registry is this chip currently registered with?”
Step 2: decide what you want the record to say
Different registries offer different options. Common choices include:
- Updating the record to show your pet is deceased
- Removing your phone number from public display (if they support it)
- Keeping your contact info, but adding a note like “deceased” (if that feels okay)
Step 3: use a short script (copy/paste)
“Hi — I’m the registered owner of microchip #[MICROCHIP NUMBER]. My pet has passed away. Could you please update the record accordingly and confirm the change by email? Thank you.”
Step 4: save confirmation (1 minute)
Take a screenshot or keep the confirmation email in a folder called Pet paperwork. Future-you will appreciate not having to re-do it.
